To Istanbul

Self-initiated Project Book Design · Book Binding · Silkscreen Printing · Sewing · Packaging Design
I created these four artists’ books about life in Istanbul to show what life is like in a City that some may not consider visiting or living in. The books all have the same screen-printed inserts, each focussing on a different person’s perspective of Istanbul. I wanted to convey the feel of the City with it's rich heritage and culture, cosmopolitan outlook and strong textiles industry. The illustrations and patterns were inspired by elaborately decorated Koran and historic artifacts found in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art and around the City. I used simple materials and processes to produce the books with bold motifs printed in black, overlaid with bright, contemporary, colourful patterns. The books are designed to be the same size as a standard modern Koran and are displayed on travel cushions, inspired by Ottoman Koran reading frames.
Books: 6 x 9 inches. Hand silkscreen printed on somerset paper, hand bound and stitched in maple veneer covers. Cushions: 40 x 40cm Hand silkscreen printed onto cotton sateen with covered buttons.
